Darren Waterston created this large-scale artwork, "Edifice," using oil and alkyd on linen. The canvas presents a washed-out vista, dominated by muted greens and grays that evoke a sense of melancholic reflection. Within this abstracted landscape, fragmented structures emerge, their forms dissolving into the atmospheric haze. Waterston plays with the notion of architectural stability by rendering buildings in a state of perpetual decay, challenging our understanding of permanence. The semiotic implications here suggest a broader commentary on the transient nature of human endeavors and the inevitable entropy of constructed systems. Note how the dissolution of form invites us to question fixed meanings, suggesting that even the most solid structures are subject to the fluid dynamics of time and interpretation. In doing so, the work positions itself within a larger philosophical discourse on impermanence, inviting viewers to contemplate the provisionality of existence itself.
