The Gebrüder Wehrli made this photograph of the Jungfraubahn station in the Swiss Alps, and what strikes me is the way the tones really sculpt the scene. Look at how the blacks and whites don't just describe, they build form. It's almost like a drawing, with light and shadow creating these dramatic contrasts, like a charcoal rendering. The texture of the mountain, all those icy ridges, it feels so tangible, doesn't it? I keep coming back to the train tracks, they’re so definite, like a set of rules in the midst of all that chaos. They almost look man-made, like a dark line drawn with a thick marker. This photo reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter's landscapes, not just in the subject matter, but in the way they capture this sense of the sublime. Like Richter, it feels like they're not just showing us a place but questioning what it means to see, to feel, to be small in the face of something so huge and indifferent.
