This is "The Relics" by J. J. Grandville, a lithograph from "The Complete Works of Béranger". Created in the 19th century, it reflects the rise of political satire in response to the socio-political upheavals in France. Grandville, known for his biting social commentary, presents us with a skeletal figure dressed in religious regalia, presiding over a reliquary. The artist critiques the entrenched power of religious institutions. Note how the solemnity of the religious setting is subverted by the presence of death. The figures flanking the skeleton seem to be in awe. What are they really worshiping? Is it faith or is it simply the spectacle of power, even when it's hollow? "The Relics" invites us to consider how institutions shape identities and beliefs, often obscuring the boundary between reverence and critique. Grandville's work remains relevant as we navigate the complexities of faith, power, and representation today.
