Waldemar Titzenthaler made this photograph of his kids dancing with a woman and another child in a forest. Isn’t it funny how sepia-toned photos can feel both antique and timeless at once? Looking at this, I feel like I’m watching a moment snatched from a dream. I imagine him, the photographer, fiddling with his equipment, trying to capture the scene as it unfolds. Maybe he was thinking about how to freeze a moment of pure joy and spontaneity? I can almost smell the damp earth and hear the faint rustle of leaves. I think about the relationship between the two children and the woman. There’s something about the way they’re holding hands in a circle that’s so evocative. Like they are caught in a dance that feels ancient and unknowable. Artists often use images of circles or rings to convey the idea of endlessness or connection. It reminds me of other artists like Hilma af Klint, who explored similar ideas of connection and spirituality in her work. Each artist in their own way adds to the conversation.
