This is Jim Goldberg's "Hollywood and Vine", a photograph with handwritten text, part of his series "Raised by Wolves" made in the late 20th century. The series explores the lives of runaway and homeless teenagers living on the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Goldberg's work gains meaning through its gritty black and white aesthetic which throws into sharp relief the cultural references to Hollywood glamour. The subjects of this series exist on the margins of that world and their experiences stand in stark contrast to the glittering facade of Hollywood. Goldberg has been exhibited in major institutions, and his work touches on social issues and challenges prevailing social norms. To fully understand Goldberg's approach, one should consider the socio-political context of the time, including economic disparities, social welfare policies, and cultural attitudes toward youth and homelessness. The meaning of art is always contingent on its social context.
