This is Elmer G. Anderson’s ‘Hose Carriage’ made with watercolor on paper. The color palette is dominated by muted browns and grays, but with these gorgeous, playful accents of blue and gold that catch the eye and make the whole thing sing. I’m drawn to the way Anderson meticulously renders each spoke of the wheels, a process of repetition that feels almost meditative. Look closer, and you'll notice how the watercolor is applied in thin, transparent layers, building up depth and texture. There’s this beautiful balance between precision and fluidity, a dance between control and letting the medium do its thing. The craftsmanship reminds me of Charles Demuth's technical drawings, but with a folk art twist. It's like Anderson is inviting us to appreciate the beauty of everyday objects. Art is a constant conversation, isn't it? A way of seeing and interpreting the world, one brushstroke at a time.
