Robert Frank’s photographic contact sheet, Fourth of July--Coney Island 5, reveals the artist's selection process through red markings on the gelatin silver print. It is such an intimate look into the artist's practice; like a painter's under sketch, we see the bones beneath the skin. I can imagine Frank on that beach, dodging bodies, trying to capture something about the day. What was he looking for? An angle? A feeling? He probably snapped away, hoping for one frame out of the whole roll to crystallize. The red circles and crosses feel so decisive, yet so arbitrary. Why this one and not that one? It's like a painter agonizing over a brushstroke, knowing that each decision alters the whole. He must have been thinking about light, composition, and maybe something deeper about American life. In the end, it’s about choices. Artists make them all the time, shaping and refining until something resonates. And just as a painter learns from the masters, Frank's work speaks to photographers today.
