Maxime Maufra made "The Portivy Beach" with paint, and I love how the brushwork really lets you feel the hand of the artist. The paint isn't trying to trick you into thinking it's something else. It’s like Maufra is saying, "Hey, this is paint, and I'm using it to conjure a place." I'm drawn to the lower left corner, the way those greens and browns mix, it's like he swirled them together right on the canvas. It’s a small area, but it sets the tone for the whole piece. The way the paint sits on the surface feels honest, unpretentious. Maufra’s work makes me think of Van Gogh. Both had this way of loading up the brush and letting the paint do the talking. It’s not about perfection, but about the joy of putting color to canvas. Art is about keeping the conversation going, riffing off each other, and finding new ways to see the world.
