This is Ludmilla Calderon’s rendering of an Andiron and Fireplace Set, drawn sometime between 1855 and 1995, with what appears to be graphite or charcoal. Notice that the utensils are carefully laid out in the frame like specimens, each shown with its unique features on full display. The andiron, tongs, poker, shovel and stand are all characterized by smooth surfaces, and a fine detailing that gives the set a sense of classical elegance. While the drawing medium is simple, the image evokes the heat and grit of a metal forge. The artist is also interested in production as she focuses on the design elements of the set. This piece invites us to consider the labor and skill involved in crafting objects for domestic life. It underscores the importance of design and making, challenging the traditional hierarchy between fine art and craft.
