Frederika Henriëtte Broeksmit made this etching, titled 'Buiig weer' or 'Rainy Weather', but sometime before 1945. The etching is mostly monochrome. Look at the mass of scribbled lines that suggest a storm. The boat is drawn with a sense of urgency. The etched lines are so chaotic and rough around the edges. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's loose, gestural style, where the process of making is visible and celebrated. Consider the overall texture – it's rough and immediate. The artist isn’t trying to hide anything; instead, she's embracing the physicality of the medium, the way the acid bites into the metal, and the way the ink sits on the paper. It’s like a visual record of a thought process, capturing the fleeting experience of being in a storm. It's not about perfection but about capturing a feeling. In this way, the piece feels very modern.
