This is a charcoal drawing from 1923 by Erich Wichmann that shows a very simplified figure and some handwritten text below. Look at how Wichmann uses just a few simple lines to create this funny figure. It reminds me of some of Picasso's drawings, or maybe even Joan Miró, but with a bit more of a satirical edge. I can imagine the artist quickly sketching this out, maybe in a cafe, capturing someone's essence with just a few strokes of charcoal. I wonder what Wichmann was thinking about when he made this? Maybe he was trying to capture something about the absurdity of modern life, or maybe he was just having fun playing with form. What do you think? It feels like an inside joke, and even though I don’t fully get it, that makes me want to know more. Artists are always talking to each other across time, inspiring each other to see the world in new ways. It’s an ongoing conversation, and we’re all invited to join in.
