This is an untitled collage by Conrad Marca-Relli, and looking at it, I can imagine him feeling his way around the canvas. He’s working with a stark palette, a creamy white background contrasting with bold, black shapes that feel both deliberate and intuitive. I wonder what Marca-Relli was thinking as he pieced this together. The central, ochre form has a rough, tactile quality, like raw canvas, playing off the flatness of the painted elements. There's a horizontal line slicing through the composition, creating a sense of tension and imbalance, but also drawing your eye across the surface. It reminds me a bit of Franz Kline’s work. Ultimately, painting is like a conversation, artists speaking to each other across generations through form, color, and gesture. And Marca-Relli’s collage speaks to that ongoing dialogue, embracing uncertainty and inviting us to find our own meaning within its abstract shapes.
