Curator: Upon first seeing this, I'm struck by its muted intimacy; it's as if the artist has captured a stolen moment. Editor: Indeed, this oil painting, “Woman Sitting by the Fireside,” was completed circa 1894 by Édouard Vuillard. The painting really epitomizes his intimist style, where he turned his attention to the domestic sphere, particularly women. I’m also intrigued by Vuillard’s deliberate blurring of boundaries between the figure and the environment. Is the wallpaper, perhaps, an expression of domestic containment? Curator: Precisely!
