This is Stefano della Bella's "Chile" print, part of the "Jeu de la Géographie" playing cards, created in the 17th century. It's a small work, using fine lines to depict a figure who represents Chile. The figure is composed of a series of lines that define its form and texture, giving the figure a sense of movement, with a headdress, shield and staff. The lines are not uniform, but vary in thickness and density, creating contrast and depth. There is a visual hierarchy at play: The figure and title are emphasized through their placement at the top and center, drawing our eye to the image and the label. This print functions as both an aesthetic object and a tool for knowledge. It invites us to reflect on how geographic and cultural identities were constructed and disseminated in early modern Europe, blending the boundaries of art, science, and cultural representation.
