This is an undated portrait of Frederik, Prince of Orange-Nassau, made by an anonymous artist. As a member of the Dutch Royal Family, Frederik's identity was shaped by expectations of leadership and service. His clothes reflect his position within the aristocracy. The tailored white coat, the gold embellishments and the star hung around his neck are all indicators of status and power. The high collar and powdered wig were fashionable status symbols, yet perhaps somewhat restrictive. How might these constraints reflect the expectations placed upon Frederik as a royal figure? We can consider the portrait as an attempt to portray the qualities Frederik wished to project, of dignity, authority and tradition. Yet, as we gaze upon his image today, what other dimensions of his identity and experience might we imagine?
