Aron from Kangeq created this woodcut print, depicting an episode from Greenlandic Norse sagas. Observe the chief, Oungortok, poised to cast his son into the lake. This act of desperation echoes the motif of sacrifice found across cultures, from Abraham and Isaac to the stories of ancient Greece. Note the pursuer, Kasape, arms raised, perhaps in triumph or warning. This upraised arm reminds us of classical depictions of figures like Nike, the goddess of victory, a symbol of power and impending fate, although here, inverted, it’s a pursuit. The landscape, stark and unforgiving, mirrors the emotional turmoil of the scene, a visual echo of the psychological landscape. We find this tension between man and nature recurring through art history, serving as a reminder of the emotional weight embedded in visual symbols, resurfacing and evolving across time.
