Editor: Here we have Melchior Küsel’s “Hercules Accompanied by Pegasus,” a striking black and white print. It feels very dynamic, almost theatrical. What's your take on its symbolism? Curator: It's a potent blend of classical mythology and power dynamics. Hercules, often seen as the ultimate masculine hero, is juxtaposed with Pegasus, a symbol of intellect and inspiration. How does this pairing challenge or reinforce traditional notions of heroism? Editor: That's interesting. I hadn't thought about Hercules in terms of intellect, more as just raw strength. Curator: Exactly! Küsel invites us to question the very definition of "hero." Is it brute force, or the ability to harness intellectual and spiritual power? Perhaps it's both, or neither. Editor: So, it's not just a mythological scene, but a commentary on power itself? Curator: Precisely. It invites us to critically examine the societal values projected onto these iconic figures. What does it mean to have power? Editor: It's amazing how much can be unpacked from one image. I'll never look at Hercules the same way again.
