This undated, untitled drawing was made by George Bunker with ink on paper. Bunker’s lines dance and hover, suggesting a quick, all-over composition. To me, it’s a great example of how artmaking can be a process of discovery, of seeing where a line takes you. The dark ink on the off-white paper creates a stark contrast. The texture is smooth, but the lines themselves vary in thickness, giving a sense of depth and movement. The squiggles and curves remind me a little of Cy Twombly’s work, but with a more architectural feel. Look at the lines at the bottom right. They almost seem to be forming a word, or a signature, but it remains just out of reach. It’s like a half-formed thought, or a fleeting image. Ultimately, Bunker’s drawing reminds me that art doesn’t always need to be polished or perfect, it can be a space for play, experimentation, and ambiguity.
