Lorenz Frølich created this watercolour artwork, Mytologiske scener og skitser, held at the SMK, using delicate washes of colour to depict a scene imbued with a mythic quality. The composition is neatly arranged in a horizontal format, framed by an ornamental border, and uses a clear, bright palette. The figures are positioned to direct the viewer's eye across the scene, which creates a narrative flow. Frølich uses line and form to render his figures in classical poses, reminiscent of ancient Greek art. The rendering of the drapery is used to suggest movement and volume, particularly in the robes of the figure on the right, and the contrasts in colour, such as the juxtaposition of the red and white garments, add depth to the composition. Frølich uses a semiotic system of signs by drawing on familiar cultural codes to invite interpretations that consider themes of fate and destiny. The deliberate arrangement of figures, with the older man seemingly passing judgement, challenges any fixed meaning and allows for an ongoing dialogue between the artwork and its audience.
