Bernard Picart created this print, "Vignet met jongen die voor een dame fluitspeelt in landschap," sometime between 1673 and 1733, using the technique of etching. The fineness of the lines speaks to the artist's mastery of this demanding process. To make an etching, a metal plate, usually copper, is coated with a waxy ground. The artist then scratches an image into the ground with a needle, exposing the metal. The plate is immersed in acid, which bites into the exposed lines, creating grooves. Ink is then applied to the plate, filling the grooves, and the surface is wiped clean. Finally, the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the ink and creating the print. Looking closely, you can see the etched lines that define the figures and landscape. Note the contrast between the delicate, controlled lines of the figures and the looser, more atmospheric lines of the background. The amount of work involved in creating this level of detail is considerable, reflecting the value placed on skilled craftsmanship in the 18th century.
