Gustave Caillebotte painted this regatta scene at Villers using oil on canvas. The material qualities of oil paint, its viscosity and capacity for layering, lend themselves to the depiction of light and atmosphere on the water’s surface. Notice how Caillebotte has applied the paint in short, broken strokes, allowing him to capture the movement of the waves and the shimmering reflections of light. The canvas support also plays a role. Its texture is subtly visible beneath the paint, adding a tactile quality to the scene. Beyond the materials, it's interesting to consider the social context. Caillebotte came from a wealthy family, which allowed him the leisure to paint such scenes. Regattas like this were popular leisure activities for the upper classes, reflecting a culture of privilege and recreation. So, while the painting is ostensibly about the beauty of the sea, it also speaks to the social and economic realities of its time. Paying attention to the materiality of the painting and its cultural context, allows us to understand it more deeply.
