This photograph of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with the Jungfrau peak on the left, was made by the Wehrli Brothers. It is monotone, muted, subtle. The whole image feels like it has been lightly washed, it's less about sharp edges and more about atmosphere. I’m drawn to how the textures created within the image seem to be working against each other, rough rock versus soft snow, and the very very faint buildings nestled in the foreground, that are juxtaposed with the intense and monumental scale of the landscape. These are the things that jump out and keep me invested in this landscape. There's something timeless about it. It reminds me of Caspar David Friedrich, the way he dealt with similar concerns of scale and atmosphere, but there's something modern about it too, because photography always has a way of making things feel contemporary. Ultimately, it leaves space for you to bring your own associations to the image.
