This classical juxtaposition, human presence alongside busts and other sculpted body parts, implies the importance of art for education. Do you find other symbols within this photograph that imply a lesson of value for society? Editor: Well, considering that the image seems to be meant as a preparatory study of sorts for sculptors and artists, would you say that it reflects more of the artists' needs rather than cultural values? Curator: Needs and values often dance together. Photography, especially nude studies, was vital to the artist, and photography democratized artmaking by rendering classical ideas accessible. Art education provided people with knowledge of how culture expresses itself through art, connecting both individual ambition with collective cultural memory. Can this then not influence or shape societal norms and cultural expressions?
