Odilon Redon painted 'Peyrelebade' with oil on canvas; a landscape, it seems, yet it speaks to so much more. Consider the house—a seemingly simple structure, but in its isolation, it echoes the human psyche, a vessel of secrets and memories. It's framed by the trees, tall dark cypresses, which since antiquity, have stood as guardians of the underworld, symbols of mourning and remembrance. We see these same funereal trees in countless Roman landscapes, emblems of the passage of time. This house, this cypress, are containers of affect, resonating across epochs. The landscape as a repository for melancholy, for the subconscious. A space to hold our deepest anxieties and longings; Redon taps into this collective reservoir of feeling. We see this configuration reappearing throughout art history, non-linearly, surfacing in unexpected contexts. The image becomes a potent force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level.
