This album of photographs of Amsterdam and its surroundings was made by an anonymous artist, and the process feels baked into the cover. Its aged texture and deep burgundy color immediately evoke a sense of history and personal narrative. The surface has this wonderful worn quality, almost like you could run your hand across it and feel the passage of time. I like to imagine the album being carried around, opened and closed countless times as people gathered around to look through the photos. The deep burgundy, almost brown color is just gorgeous, and there is something about the simplicity of the cover that invites you to imagine what stories lie within. The cover is not just a container but a tangible piece of history, an intimate object that bridges the past and the present. It reminds me of something by Gerhard Richter, where he obscures or scrapes into a photo to reveal another layer of truth. Art is about seeing and showing, revealing and concealing, all at the same time.
