This small photograph, taken by David Ketel, shows a group of Dutch people in Korea. Snapshots like this, they're all about capturing a moment, right? Like freezing a little piece of life, but it’s also a construction. Look at the colors, they’re a little faded, like a memory. The blues in the sky and sea seem to vibrate against the khaki of the uniforms, a bit like a Diebenkorn painting. And the texture, the way the light hits the surface makes it feel so real, like I could almost touch these people. My eye keeps going back to the man in the suit, he stands apart from the others. What’s his story? This image reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter’s blurred photographs, they both share a certain feeling of nostalgia. Ultimately, art is about the questions it raises, the conversations it starts, not about easy answers.
