Roy Weber made this drawing of a Trivet with graphite and watercolor. I like how simple the drawing is, how the light and shadow describe the object. It’s like Weber is working it out as he goes, you can really see the process. There's a bit of weight in the base, it looks like it could actually stand up. The way the watercolour describes the light on the metal is really skillful, the variations in the tone makes me think about how the image was built up in layers. There’s this great little curve at the top, like the flourish on a signature. Weber reminds me of some of the drawings of domestic objects made by Lucie Rie, but he’s definitely doing his own thing. It all feels very open-ended, like a question mark hanging in the air.
