Shizen Koji, from the series "Pictures of No Performances (Nogaku Zue)" 1898
Dimensions Approx. 25.2 × 37.4 cm (10 × 14 4/3 in.)
Tsukioka Kôgyo created "Shizen Koji" as part of his series "Pictures of No Performances" using woodblock printing. The composition features flat, pastel colors that give a sense of calm, almost dreamlike. The figures seem suspended, not interacting, on a plane of muted color. Kôgyo plays with Japanese art traditions by presenting figures and elements isolated against a neutral backdrop. This suggests that the structure of a Noh performance can exist independently of action, and that each performer and costume holds its own value and meaning within the cultural framework of the play. What stands out here is how Kôgyo dissects the elements of Noh theatre, presenting them as studies. This approach prompts us to consider how each element contributes to the whole, and how the essence of Noh performance can be captured through these deconstructed depictions. By challenging the traditional representation of a dynamic stage performance, he invites a deeper exploration of its components.
