Hans Hinterreiter created this work, Studie 247A, in 1950, and it's like looking into a kaleidoscope of the mid-century modern. I'm immediately drawn to the geometric shapes, like little houses tumbling in a very organized way. I imagine Hinterreiter carefully plotting each shape, maybe using math or some system he developed—a methodical build-up of color and form. The palette here is earthy yet playful, with blues, reds, yellows, and browns interacting with the pale pink of the background. The colors are a little chalky, which creates a sense of depth, as if you could almost touch the surface and feel the texture. Each little house looks the same, but taken as a whole, the painting feels like the patterns in a spirograph. Artists are always responding to one another across time, trying out new ideas. I wonder if Hans was ever aware of how his paintings might one day impact other artists working today?
