Lauretta Vinciarelli made this watercolour, Long Horizon II, in tones of ochre, black and white, and I can imagine how it came into being, shifting and emerging through architectural structures and light. I sympathize with the artist, imagining what it might have been like to create such a calm vision. What was she thinking as she constructed the image? It’s amazing how the material aspects of the painting, like the watery texture of the watercolour, shape our experience. The paint is thin, almost translucent, which gives it a feeling of lightness, like the sky reflected on water. The geometric shapes, like the repeated arches, communicate a sense of order and a certain peace. This piece relates to the artist's wider interest in architecture, which can also be found in the work of Giorgio de Chirico. Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is a form of embodied expression, which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
