Lauretta Vinciarelli created "Long Horizon II" using watercolour on paper, and you can really feel the hand in the process. The washes aren't overworked, leaving a sense of airiness. There’s a calmness to the limited palette. Earthy browns, creams, and grays create this kind of mirrored, tunnel-like space. Up close, you can see the delicate, almost translucent quality of the watercolor, like thin glazes laid over each other. Look at how the light hits those archways, reflecting onto the water below, its pretty dreamy. The horizon line gives the impression of a landscape, creating an infinite space for the imagination to wonder. Vinciarelli was an architect, and her work often looks at interior and exterior spaces, so maybe this is a place she designed, or maybe, like a Hopper painting, it's more like a feeling. With its quiet, contemplative mood, I’m reminded of Agnes Martin’s ethereal grids, but here, it’s space and light that create the structure. So cool.
