Lodewijk van de Winkel, likely made this portrait of a man on horseback, a member of the Van Heerdt family, in Baarn. You know, the first thing that hits you is the tonal range, all those grays, but look closer and it’s really all about the light and how it defines form. I like the texture of the horse’s coat, see how van de Winkel captures the sheen? It’s all about how he manipulates the light, bringing the horse to life. And then there’s the man, upright and proper. Notice that starch white sash set against the dark jacket. It's like a stripe of pure light, and it just pops. This piece reminds me a little of Manet, you know, how he also played with light and dark, but it’s got its own thing going on. Art, it’s just a conversation, right?
