Harry Callahan took this photo, Highland Park, Michigan, using a camera to capture a line of people. The image has captured a moment in time and has fixed it. Look at the way these figures are standing. I can imagine Callahan thinking about geometry, lines, shapes, and composition as he framed the shot. It’s a formal set-up, but also intimate. The tonal range from dark to light is really interesting in the shadows and the surface of the road. The row of figures with their heads tilted down and turned away from the camera reminds me of a flock of birds. Their postures are really interesting. Callahan was interested in capturing the everyday. It reminds me a little of some of Walker Evans’ documentary photography. Artists are always in dialogue with each other, aren’t they? Looking, responding, and finding their own way. Each bringing something unique and unexpected to the conversation.
