This etching, made by Jonas Umbach, depicts two fishermen with a fyke net. The fishermen are shown in a watery landscape, their forms rendered with a detailed hand. Consider the symbol of the fish. Since ancient times, the fish has been a symbol of abundance. But it is also a primordial symbol for the subconscious. In Christianity, the fish became an emblem of faith, representing Christ himself; yet, even before Christianity, the fish held a place in the mythologies of various cultures, linked to fertility. The act of fishing, then, takes on layers of meaning, becoming a symbolic journey into the depths of the unknown. Here, the image of fishermen evokes a sense of timelessness. This scene resonates, as do the echoes of ancient rituals, continuing to engage us on a deep, subconscious level. The symbol evolves, yet it is always connected, resurfacing in various forms throughout history.
