Frank Holl painted this portrait of Sir Edward Fry in oil on canvas. Born in 1827, Fry was not only a judge, but also an author, and active in philanthropic and social reform movements. The composition of the piece is simple, and Fry's dark suit and the somber background, reflect the serious nature of his profession. His clasped hands, pale skin and bright white collar draw the eye and center the viewer's attention on his face. Holl does well to capture Fry’s thoughtful expression. The portrait is fairly traditional in its representation of a man of status. Yet, considering Fry's commitment to progressive causes, this formal depiction also invites reflection on the complex relationship between public image and personal conviction, between the traditional expectations of the Victorian elite and an individual's desire to instigate social change.
