Editor: This watercolor by Elena Prentice, titled "Landscape, Perigord", presents a simple scene with vibrant greens. I’m curious about the seemingly arbitrary lines that cut vertically across the picture. What are your thoughts on this work? Curator: Let’s consider the means of production here. The vertical lines could be a deliberate choice, disrupting the tradition of landscape painting. Perhaps the artist is commenting on the commodification of nature through the lens of artistic labor? Editor: That's a really interesting point. I hadn't considered that the artist was perhaps making a statement about how we consume images of nature. Curator: Or maybe, Prentice is just showing us the raw materiality of image making. Thinking about the paper, paint, and the labor that went into it. We could discuss this work for hours.
