This drawing of a display cabinet, or ‘Vitrine’ as they call it in French, was made by Léon Laroche. It’s all about line and delicacy, like a whisper of an idea rather than a shout. The way Laroche uses these really fine lines reminds me a little of Agnes Martin’s drawings, so fragile and quiet. It's interesting to see the texture that's created by cross hatching on the shadow beneath the cabinet. The colour here is minimal, the pink, cream and gold work together to create a soft, dreamy effect. It's as if the cabinet is floating on a cloud. It’s not just a depiction of a thing, but a feeling, an atmosphere. I think the act of drawing like this invites us to slow down, to really look and feel what we’re seeing. It’s a reminder that art isn’t about perfection or answers, but about asking questions and embracing the beauty of imperfection and ambiguity.
