This Model of an Anchor was made by Grofsmederij Leiden. Historically, the sea has been a space of both freedom and constraint, especially for marginalized communities. The anchor, a tool to secure a vessel, also symbolizes hope and steadfastness amidst life's tempests. Crafted by Grofsmederij Leiden, this model reflects Dutch maritime history, deeply intertwined with global trade and colonialism. However, the sea is also a site of immense tragedy, through the slave trade or the plight of migrants. This polished metal anchor can be seen as a symbol of hope for safe passage and new beginnings. The anchor has a gendered dimension too; traditionally associated with masculine roles at sea, but equally vital to the women left ashore. Consider this object as a potent reminder of our connections to the vast waters that both unite and divide us.
