Willem Steelink’s ‘Elegant Company’, is a monochrome print which presents us with an intimate domestic scene. The composition is tightly packed, drawing our eye into the clustered figures and the detailed rendering of textures and patterns in their clothing. Steelink uses the graphic qualities of printmaking to create a tableau which captures the nuances of social interaction. The etching technique allows for intricate line work, which helps to define the folds of fabric, the contours of faces, and the gradations of light and shadow across the scene. Note how the artist has arranged the figures to create a rhythmic pattern of dark and light, pulling viewers into the image. The composition of the image seems to challenge fixed meanings through its intimate portrayal of everyday life. Steelink uses realism to challenge traditional values about class and power. By focusing on the subtleties of ordinary scenes, the artist encourages a re-evaluation of what is aesthetically and socially significant, inviting us to reconsider fixed meanings.
