Jesus Rafael Soto's 'Anello Edition Denise René' is made up of black and blue lines dancing in front of a black and white striped disk. Imagine Soto in his studio, carefully placing each rod, balancing precision with a sense of playful improvisation. I wonder if he ever felt like he was conducting an orchestra of lines, each one playing its part in a symphony of movement. The way the blue lines hover feels like a nod to the lightness of Calder's mobiles. It's like Soto's asking: can a sculpture also be a painting? Can it float between dimensions? Soto's work reminds us that art doesn't have to stand still, it can wiggle, jiggle, and invite us to join in its dance. Much like Josef Albers' colour theory, this work shows us how perception is relative. It's like a reminder that art is a conversation, a call and response across time and space.
