Simone Cantarini rendered this ink drawing, Madonna and Child seated on clouds and surrounded by angels, in the 17th century. Here, the Virgin Mary is depicted enthroned above billowing clouds, her pose echoing ancient depictions of celestial deities. A halo radiates around her head, a symbol adopted by early Christians from Roman art to signify divine status. The infant Christ is nestled in her arms, their connection visually emphasized to evoke feelings of tenderness, reminiscent of the ancient motif of the mother goddess. We find this echoed in Egyptian images of Isis and Horus. The sacredness of motherhood, deeply imprinted in our collective psyche, crosses cultures. Observe, too, the cherubic angels; their presence recalls classical putti. The cyclical return of these figures, adapted from pagan art into Christian iconography, reflects a continuing need to visualize heavenly beings. In essence, this image reveals how deeply human emotions are entwined with symbols, continually resurrected and reshaped across time.
