Egon Schiele made this drawing of a semi-nude, back view, at some point in his short but intense life. Just look at that line! So economical, right? Like he’s trying to capture the very essence of the body with the least amount of effort. I imagine Schiele, maybe in a small, cluttered studio, rapidly sketching, trying to get it down before the model shifts or the feeling fades. There’s a sense of urgency, a real need to capture something fleeting. It’s a vulnerable pose, the figure almost turning away, yet there’s strength too, in the way he defines the curve of the back and the swell of the hips. Think about other artists like Matisse or even Tracey Emin, who use line in equally expressive ways. It’s like they’re all having this conversation across time, about what a simple mark can do, how it can convey feeling, weight, and presence, all at once. It makes me want to grab a pencil and paper.
