Here we see Zahrah Al-Ghamdi’s construction, "Potential 2 Traditional Domestic Architecture." The column, built from various materials, evokes the ancient ziggurats of Mesopotamia. These towering structures were not merely architectural feats; they were symbolic mountains, linking the earthly and divine realms. We find echoes of this impulse across cultures, from the pyramids of Egypt to the temples of the Mayans, all striving to reach the heavens. Note the layers of Al-Ghamdi’s column: stones, perhaps, or clay, each a stratum of memory and cultural heritage. The recurring motif of the column itself, is found through the ages – think of the Roman pillars, symbols of strength and civilization – yet here, the column seems fragile, almost precarious. This fragility evokes a powerful tension. It speaks to the transient nature of cultural memory, how traditions are built, eroded, and rebuilt, in a perpetual cycle of creation and destruction. Like a dream, these collective memories exert a force upon us, shaping our perceptions and stirring emotions that resonate deep within the human psyche.
