Małgorzata Serwatka created "Horses I" using printmaking techniques. At first glance, the composition is divided into two distinct areas, each playing with the viewer's perception of space and form. The upper section is dominated by a square field of color, ranging from warm oranges to deep reds, seemingly solid yet destabilized by aggressive marks. The splatters of black extend outward, breaking the solidity of the square. Below, a series of horses are represented with quick, gestural strokes. The contrast between the abstract square and recognizable figures introduces a dynamic tension. This juxtaposition might be Serwatka's way of exploring themes of freedom and constraint, where the wild, uncontainable essence of the horses is set against the ordered, but disrupted, block of color. The piece challenges us to consider the ways in which we perceive both form and freedom, and how these elements can coexist, or clash, within a single frame.
