Curator: This is "Ski Jacket" by Peter Doig, currently held in the Tate Collections. It presents a densely packed scene. I find it kind of haunting, actually. Editor: Haunting? I see process more than mood. Look at the density of the application, the layering. This is about materiality. Curator: But it’s also about place, isn’t it? Doig often deals with memory and the construction of landscapes. Think about how skiing is a social activity. Editor: True, yet the lack of precise detail makes this feel more about the act of reproduction, the labor involved in printmaking, than any particular social scene. Curator: Perhaps. I'm left pondering the relationship between the commercialization of winter sports and our collective memories of leisure. Editor: And I’m fascinated by the physicality of the print. How the ink sits on the paper. Curator: Indeed. It seems we've both found entry points through which to contemplate Doig's work. Editor: Exactly. Something for everyone, isn't it?

Ten Etchings is Doig’s first print portfolio. As the title indicates, it is a suite of ten etchings. The portfolio was produced in an edition of thirty-five. Tate’s copy is one of six additional proof sets. Each print is individually signed and numbered ‘TC’ (Tate copy) by the artist. The portfolio is presented in a red artist’s solander box with title and colophon pages designed by Peter B. Willberg. It was printed at Hope Sufferance Press, London on 350gsm Zerkall paper and published by Charles Booth-Clibborn under his imprint, The Paragon Press.
