This untitled work was made by Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski, although we don’t know exactly when. In this disturbing image, Beksinski seems to critique the institutions of social control. Consider the historical context of Soviet-dominated Poland, a place where freedom of expression was curtailed. This provides a lens through which we might view the imagery of restriction represented here. The figure is trapped, bound, and perhaps tortured, but it appears to smile through it all.
