Niels Larsen Stevns made this pencil sketch, Studier af ornamenter og profiler, in a small notebook sometime between 1864 and 1941. The marks are tentative, searching - you can see the artist thinking through the forms, not quite resolved but full of possibilities. It’s the kind of drawing that reminds you that artmaking is a process, a journey of discovery. The paper is the color of old newsprint, a warm grey-brown that feels both aged and intimate. The pencil lines are delicate, almost whispered onto the page, yet they define these architectural forms with surprising clarity. Look at the swirls and curves of the ornaments at the bottom of the page. They’re not perfect, not precisely rendered, but they have a liveliness, a sense of movement. They remind me a bit of Cy Twombly’s scrawled lines, where the imperfection is part of the beauty. I think of Stevns and Twombly as fellow travelers in the world of art, each finding their own way to express a similar feeling. Art is an ongoing conversation, and this little sketch feels like a quiet but important part of that dialogue.
