Curatorial notes

Henri Matisse made this panel with mask, we don't know when or with what, but it feels like a journey. There’s something so playful about Matisse’s approach; he’s not trying to trick us into thinking these are real objects, they’re just shapes doing their thing on a flat plane. I love the way he divides the panel into different color blocks, each with its own kind of graphic intervention. Take the top left, for example, that green looks almost brushed, and the mask above it seems like it is both playful and a bit menacing, but when combined, they create such a unique feeling of freedom. The tension between that color and form is just so Matisse, isn’t it? He invites us to consider a space beyond conventional representation. It reminds me a bit of Miro, actually, in its biomorphic forms and sense of humor. It’s like they’re both saying, "Hey, art can be serious, but it can also be a big, joyful game." And isn’t that what it’s all about?
