This small print, made in 1923, shows a drawing of a lady in a flapper dress. Look at the fine lines that conjure this figure. I wonder about the person who made this image. I imagine them perched over a drawing board, carefully rendering the details of the dress, a meditation on form, a dance of observation and rendering. They must have been thinking about fashion, but also about line, shape, color, and form. What it must have been like, to live in that time, and record the image of a person with your pens. Consider the intricate patterns on the tunic, each tiny squiggle a testament to the artist's hand. It reminds me of the way Cy Twombly layered marks to create a field of visual information. It's as if the artist is saying, “Look closely, see the world in a single stroke, each line pregnant with the potential for infinite expression.” This work is part of a continuum, a timeless exchange of ideas across generations.
