Curator: Here we have Jean François Ribault’s, "The Crowning with Thorns." Ribault was a French artist who lived from 1767 to 1820. Editor: It’s oppressive. All that dark ink, pressing in on Christ. Like the weight of the world is crushing him. Curator: The piece is a study in the abuse of power, isn't it? The jeering soldiers and the impassive bust overlooking the scene. Editor: Absolutely. That bust feels like the cold indifference of institutions. Makes you wonder, who are we really serving with such displays of cruelty? Curator: Indeed. I think the art challenges us to look beyond the immediate scene, and reflect on those power structures. Editor: It’s a bleak reflection, to be sure. But necessary, I suppose.
