This sketch, "Dancing Man in Traditional Costume," was made by Reijer Stolk, though we don't know when. You can see him working out the angles, the costume, the pose... I can imagine Stolk with a sketchbook and a pencil. I love how you can see his thinking, the emergent quality as he is trying to capture this figure. Look at how the lines cross over each other, mapping out a sense of space and volume. Is the dancer about to move, or is he holding a pose? This is not quite a drawing, but a kind of notation that gives you a feeling that something is about to happen, as if Stolk is setting the stage, so to speak. It makes me think about other artists who explore movement and form, like Degas, or more recently, someone like Paul McCarthy! It's all connected, this conversation through art across time. Each one building on what came before. What do you think?
